Why this turbocharger?..

Now days there is a lot of information available on the Internet to equip your Honda with a turbocharger. It really doesn’t matter witch engine you are running, u can find information about it. Especially on Internet forums like honda-tech.com or homemadeturbo.com u can find some interesting information about different setups. U can compare the used materials en the final power output to set your own target.

I use my Crx as a daily drive, and sometimes just want to have fun on the streets. So I started searching some appropriate turbo setups on the Honda enthusiasts Internet forums witch would match my goals. The engine I use is the B16a with a few ‘bold-on’ modifications. My power goal is about 275hp and 200nm, so 9psi of boost would possibly be enough to reach this.

Because I want to understand everything about turbochargers before buying one, I started studying about it. Of course, I could buy one on advise of a shop or someone who knows already what kind of turbocharger to pick for matching my goal.  But this was a great opportunity for me to learn more about turbochargers and the correct use of it. During my study I compared a few flowmaps of different turbochargers. I compared T3/T04 turbochargers and a few Garret GT28/30 ball bearing turbochargers.

On a Dutch Internet forum I found a perfect formula witch I could use to calculate which turbocharger would work best on my B16a engine considering my power goal. By using this formula u can calculate what's the airflow of the B16a at a certain pressure, per amount of revs. By using the turbochargers ‘flowmap’ u can use the result of the calculations to see if the turbocharger performs the way u want on your engine.

I choose to use the T3/T04e 57trim .63A/R with a stage 3 turbine wheel.

U can see this is a perfect turbo for my power goal. The marks in the flowmap are the result of my calculations. When using this turbocharger, boost lag wil be minor. Even at 9000rpm the turbocharger will be efficient.
